Over 100

I'm happy about getting 101 in the TOEFL on November 14. As I mentioned in the past post, I was confident that I get my best score in that test. Now, it comes true! The detaile of the score is below.

Reading 27
Listening 28
Speaking 19
Writing 27
Total 101

I think I must add some points in the speaking section because I hear that a lot of US MBA programs concern about the speaking score of Japanese applicants and they decide not to accept us if the speaking score is below 20. I want to reduce this risk. In fact, I'm attending TOEFL speaking class recently, so I will overcome this weak point. If I get over 22 in the speaking section, the total score will become 104, which is minimam requisite of Chicago Booth. 104 in the total score is high enough to surpass the minimam requisite of almost all TOP MBA programs except HBS. If it is possible, I want to get over 109, which is minimam requisite of HBS. However, of course, because there are deadline for me to get over 700 in the GMAT and prepare for application, I should start to study for GMAT as soon as possible. Then, after I get over 700 in the GMAT, I should return to TOEFL and aim at 109.

From starting to study for TOEFL, a lot of people kindly helped me. I fully appreciate for them all. But, getting over 100 in the TOEFL is just one of the hurdles to be overcome. I must clear remaining hurdles such as GMAT, Essay, Interview, so I will continue to make effort.

Hopefully get over 100

Last weekend, I took TOEFL. I think I did well but one of the reading passages and one of the speaking tasks. The first reading passage was relatively difficult in terms of its logic and words. I took too long time to understand the meaning of the passage to finish within 20 minutes, so in the latter part, I could not use enough time to read and answer the questions. In addition, in the fifth task of the speaking section, I have time management problem. Its contents and listening are not very difficult for me but, I could not finish perfectly within 60 seconds. If there had been enough time, I could have finished and got 3.0. However, other parts of the test were OK. The other 2 passages of the reading section were easy enough for me to complete within deadline. I feel the listening section was also easy because I practiced dictation very hard in these days. And of course, in the speaking section, I feel my skill improved thanks to the classes of the TOEFL speaking school and I expect its score will surpass 20 for the first time. In the writing section, I wrote 277 words for integrated task, and 480 words for independent task, which I think is enough amounts to get over 25 and I expect its score will reach 27 or 28. As the above thought, I expect total score between 95 and 105. If the score excess 100, I will start to prepare for GMAT.

New life and study English

In this morning, I went my new room for the first time. Although I plan to move to this room in this Sunday, I could not make any time to visit my room. My new room looked very nice and large enough for two persons to live in; however, the room lacks some facilities such as gas table, room light, air conditioner and so on. So I must buy them but all of them are expensive for me... Of course, I also buy furniture such as table, sofa, and chairs. I did not know that new life requires huge amount of money. Because preparing for applying MBA programs also requires huge amount of money, my budget will be out of control if I do not make austerity plan. I will reduce drinking party and other activities require a lot of money.

In addition, I'm afraid of the situation that I must practice speaking next to my fiance because my English is not very good. Of course, I'm also afraid that I can not concentrate on my study due to existence of my fiance in the same room. To avoide these undesireble situation, I must make rules about how to live and study in the same room. I think making my fiance realize about the importance of maintaining concentaration to study English is the first step. I must get over 100 in the TOEFL by the end of this year and get over 700 in the GMAT by next summer to apply US Top MBA programs at the first round. This is greatly difficult taks for me considering my level of English. So I expect my fiance to support me.

TOEFL IN THIS YEAR

I'm planning to take TOEFL at least 4 times until end of this year for 2 reasons. First, the difficulty of each TOEFL is not consistent. Some of them are easy and the others are difficult. In easy TOEFL, a lot of people get over 100 for the first time but, in difficult TOEFL, there are very few people get it for the first time. In terms of this fact, my teacher recommend to take TOEFL as many as possible in short term. Second, the currency rate is very good condition for TOEFL test takers. Strong Yen enables us to take TOEFL chieper. Compared to 100 Yen per doller, now, we can take TOEFL 20% chieper. This difference is very big matter for me. The more I take TOEFL, the more this difference becomes bigger. Anyway, within this year, I want to get 105 or more. Thanks to English speaking class, I assure that I can achieve this great score.

In the English speaking class, I heard that I should write over 500 words in Independent writing section to get over 27 because I must get 5.0 from at least one rater. To get 5.0 in Independent writing section, the number of words is important factor and whether I can write over 500 or not within the test time is one of the benchmarks of writing skill. With regard to this point of view, I can get 27 soon because I write around 450 or more in Independent writing section. However, I must get this score as soon as possible to accomplish my goal. Because I have very limited time to improve Speaking and Writing score within this year, I ask my teacher a good strategy and in this week's class, he will give me an answer. I'm looking forward to hearing that.

New Challenge

Last Saturday, I attend a personal class for TOEFL speaking section for the first time. This class was held in a very narrow room of the just an old apartment. However, a lot of people who now study in top US MBA programs said that this class will lead my speaking score from 19 to 23 or more. In fact, the median score of this class's student is 23 or even 24. This is amazing achievement in Japan because most of Japanese even who study English hard for TOEFL can get only 18 or 19 in the speaking section.

In this class, there are only 5 or less persons at a time. So, each student is allotted a lot of time to practice and speak in the class. On the other hand, most of the big TOEFL schools have huge amount of students and there are very limited time to practice and speak. This difference has crucial impact on the result. In addition, the teacher teaches fluency, intonation, and strategy to prepare for speaking section. I feel these methods are promising for me. He said that one of the famous TOEFL school aims at 20 in the speaking section; however, he aims at at least 23 or 24, which requires different strategy and training. This is very convincing from the point of view of my own experience.

Of course, even if I attend this class, without hard practice, my score will not be improved at all. Because my work is very demanding recently, it is quite hard for me to have enough time to study English. The more I become busy, the more I should select correct way to study. In terms of this idea, I assure that choosing this class is best choice for me. I'm looking forward to practicing along with the method.
